CAT PROOFING
YOUR HOME

Cat-proofing your home is essential to create a safe and secure environment for your feline friend no matter what their age! Cats are naturally curious and agile, and certain precautions can help prevent accidents, reduce stress, and protect both your cat and your belongings.

Here are key tips for cat-proofing your home:

  • Secure Windows and Balconies: Cats may be tempted to explore open windows or balconies, posing a significant safety risk. Ensure that screens are cat proof, secure, and consider using window perches with barriers to prevent accidental falls.

  • Hide Electrical Cords: Cats may be inclined to chew on electrical cords, leading to serious injuries. Use protective coverings or secure cords out of reach to prevent electric shocks or ingestion.

  • Remove Toxic Plants: Some plants are toxic to cats, including lilies, poinsettias, and philodendrons. Remove any toxic plants from your home or place them in areas inaccessible to your cat.

  • Choose Cat-Safe Houseplants: If you enjoy having plants indoors, opt for cat-friendly varieties like catnip or cat grass. These not only provide enrichment but also cater to your cat's natural instincts and can help with digestion!

  • Store Hazardous Materials Safely: Keep household cleaners, chemicals, medications, and other potentially hazardous substances stored in secure cabinets out of your cat's reach. You may consider using child-proof locks for extra curious cats.

  • Use Cat-Friendly Furniture Covers: Cats may scratch or climb on furniture. Consider using cat-friendly furniture covers or providing scratching posts (see Resources) to redirect these behaviors and protect your belongings.

  • Secure Trash Bins: Cats are often attracted to trash bins, which can contain harmful items. Use bins with secure lids or place them in cabinets to prevent your cat from accessing potentially dangerous materials.

  • Check for Small Objects: Cats may play with and potentially ingest small objects like hair ties, rubber bands, or small toys. Keep these items out of reach to avoid choking hazards or intestinal blockages.

  • Hide Small Openings: Cats may squeeze into small openings, such as vents or crawl spaces. Ensure these areas are blocked off to prevent your cat from getting stuck or accessing potentially unsafe spaces.

  • Secure Heavy Furniture: Large or heavy furniture items, like bookshelves or cabinets, should be securely anchored to the wall to prevent accidental tipping if your cat decides to climb or explore.

  • Monitor Stove and Appliances: Cats may be attracted to warm surfaces, such as stovetops. Use covers or deterrents to keep your cat away from potentially dangerous appliances.

  • Keep Toilet Lids Closed: Toilets pose a drowning risk for kittens and small cats. Keep toilet lids closed to prevent accidents and potential exposure to harmful cleaning chemicals.

ENVIROMENTAL ESTIMULATION

A safe and secure environment should also provide stimulation for the overall well-being and mental health of your cat. Providing an enriched environment helps satisfy your cat’s natural instincts, prevents boredom, and reduces the likelihood of behavioral issues. Here are key aspects of environmental stimulation for felines (see Resources page for links):

  • Interactive Toys: Engaging toys that encourage mental and physical activity are essential for feline enrichment. Toys with textures, sounds, and moving parts can captivate a cat's interest and provide a source of entertainment.

  • Scratching Posts and Pads: Scratching is a normal feline behavior that helps cats maintain their claws and mark their territory. Providing scratching posts or pads in various textures and orientations allows cats to engage in this instinctive behavior without damaging furniture. You may need to try many different kinds (vertical vs horizontal, sisal vs carpet vs cardboard, etc until you find the exact kind your cat loves!

  • Vertical Spaces: Cats are natural climbers, and vertical spaces offer them a sense of security and territory. Cat trees, shelves, or wall-mounted perches provide opportunities for climbing, jumping, and observing their surroundings from elevated vantage points.

  • Hiding Spots: Cats often seek out hiding spots for security and relaxation. Providing cozy beds, enclosed spaces, or even cardboard boxes allows cats to retreat when they need a break or feel stressed.

  • Window Perches: Placing a perch near a window allows cats to observe outdoor activities, birds, and passing stimuli. This not only provides mental stimulation but also satisfies their predatory instincts.

  • Puzzle Feeders: Feeding activities can be turned into mental exercises by using puzzle feeders. These devices dispense food slowly, encouraging problem-solving skills and preventing rapid consumption.

  • Rotating Toys: Cats may lose interest in toys if they are constantly available. Rotating toys regularly keeps the environment novel and exciting, preventing boredom.

  • Catnip and Cat Grass: Catnip can be a source of sensory enrichment, inducing a temporary state of euphoria in some cats. Cat grass provides a safe and natural outlet for a cat's urge to nibble on plants.

  • Interactive Playtime: Regular play sessions with interactive toys, laser pointers, or feather wands provide both physical exercise and mental stimulation. These sessions mimic hunting behaviors and strengthen the bond between the cat and its owner.

  • Audio and Visual Stimuli: Playing calming music or providing access to videos designed for cats featuring birds or fish can be a source of auditory and visual stimulation.

By incorporating a variety of toys, structures, and activities, pet owners can ensure that their cats lead happy, fulfilled lives while minimizing the risk of behavior problems associated with boredom or stress.
