CAT AGGRESSION
General aggression, cat-human aggression and Inter-cat aggression are common behavioral issues that cat owners may encounter in multi-cat households. In fact, these aggression issues account for about 50% of our consults here at Cattitude Adjustment. Cats are known for their independent nature, but conflicts can arise when multiple feline personalities coexist in the same space, when a new animal enters the home, when wild animals are seen outdoors or for various other reasons.
CAUSES OF INTER-CAT AGGRESSION
Territorial Instincts: Cats are territorial animals, and conflicts may arise when they feel their territory is being invaded. Establishing and respecting territorial boundaries is crucial in preventing aggression.
Social Hierarchy: Cats have a social structure with dominant and submissive roles. When this hierarchy is disrupted, aggression may occur as cats vie for dominance.
Lack of Resources: Insufficient resources such as food, water, and litter boxes can lead to competition among cats. Ensuring an adequate supply of resources helps reduce conflict.
Medical Issues: Underlying medical problems, such as pain or illness, can trigger aggressive behavior. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to rule out any health issues.
Stress: stress from issues such as grief, loss, change in the home environment or other issues can cause aggression behaviors.
